Two West Virginia University alumni were named to the WVU Foundation Board of Directors at its annual meeting Saturday, Aug. 13. Each will serve a three-year term.
- W. Marston (Marty) Becker, president and CEO of Alterra Capital Holdings Limited (Nasdaq-ALTE), a global specialty insurer/reinsurer headquartered in Bermuda. Prior to joining Alterra in 2006, he led various insurance, reinsurance, and insurance brokerage organizations, building on a long insurance industry career. In addition, Becker currently serves as chairman of West Virginia Media Holdings (WVMH), a statewide media company that he co-founded in 2001. He earned his juris doctor and bachelor of science in business administration degrees from WVU. He is a certified public accountant. Becker previously served on the Foundation board from 1982-2005. He resides in Bermuda; Charleston, W.Va.; and Jupiter, Fla.
- Robert O. (Bob) Orders, Jr. , president of Orders Construction Company, Inc., a highway, utility and industrial construction company with operations in West Virginia and Virginia. He is a registered professional engineer in West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland, and serves on a number of industry and community boards. Orders is a 1972 graduate of WVU with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. He resides in Charleston, W.Va.
Verl O. Purdy (’64, ’09 Hon.), president, Cadrillion Capital in Charlotte, N.C., was re-elected board chairman. He has been a member of the Foundation Board of Directors since 2004. Robert R. Reynolds (’74. ’07 Hon.) of Boston, Ma., president of Putnam Investments, was re-elected vice chair. Re-elected secretary was Marcia Broughton (’76, ’79) of Clarksburg, W.Va., an attorney with the law firm of Jackson Kelly PLLC. Joan Corson Stamp (’73) of Wheeling, W.Va., will serve again as assistant secretary. All will serve one-year terms.
Directors re-elected to three-year terms include Irene C. Berger (’76, ’79) of Beckley, W.Va., John C. Harmon (’77) of Pittsburgh, Pa., Dr. Patrice A. Harris (’82, ’86, ’92) of Atlanta, Ga. , E.G. “Ken” Kendrick Jr. (’65) of Phoenix, Az., Pamela M. Larrick (’72) New York, N.Y., Benjamin M. Statler (’73, ’09 Hon.) of Naples, Fla. and McMurray, Pa., and Fred T. Tattersall (’70) of Glen Allen, Va..
The board recognized outgoing member Dan R. Moore of Charleston, W.Va., for his service and commitment to the Foundation. Moore served 15 years on the Board of Directors, including two years as chairman (2008-2010).
Private funds donated through the WVU Foundation go to support academic programs, student scholarships, faculty development and public service initiates at WVU. The Foundation, chartered in 1954, is a private, nonprofit corporation.
