Kristen Goins’ connection to McComas, a small coal camp in Mercer County in southern West Virginia, runs deep. Her grandfather and great-grandfather were both miners, working long hours in dangerous conditions and receiving pay in company scrip.

West Virginia University Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker announced today (July 14) that Ben Murray will return to Morgantown as deputy athletics director, serving as the department’s chief development officer and providing oversight to the Mountaineer Athletic Club (MAC).

West Virginia University Extension Safety and Health received its first endowment to establish scholarship assistance for individuals seeking to obtain advanced certifications in safety and health. Nancy Valentine Harper of Rivesville, West Virginia, pledged a portion of her estate to support scholarships and a training room at WVU Extension’s Safety and Health at One Waterfront Place.  

While the Safety and Health program has previously received grants and corporate scholarships for program efforts, this is the first time a scholarship program has been established to support individuals. The David Warren Harper, M.S., Workforce Development Fund was established in memory of Harper’s late husband, David Harper, who had a career in occupational safety and health management. 

West Virginia University Jackson’s Mill has offered outdoor recreation opportunities to youth for years, but their access to the river that runs along the campus has been limited. However, through a recent partnership, they were able to add two new river access ramps, increasing these opportunities significantly.

Three West Virginia University student-led projects and three University programs will benefit from the latest round of grants awarded by Women of WVU.

Thanks to the help of many generous donors, longtime  West Virginia University Extension 4-H club leader Stacy Fint’s legacy will live on through new cultural heritage experiences for young West Virginians attending state 4-H camps.
